Terms of service

Who you're dealing with

Ruckus Metal Finishing, also trading as Ruckus Anodizing, is a California metal finishing business based in Fullerton. These terms cover using this website, buying from it, and the finishing work we do on parts you send us. Using the site or sending us a job means you accept them.

Quotes and prices

A quote is a price for the job as you have described it. It holds for 30 days. The piece count and the finish — matte or gloss — set the price more than anything else does, so if what arrives isn't what was described, usually because there are more pieces than we were told, we'll re-quote before we start rather than surprise you at the end. Prices on this site are starting prices and can change; your quote is the price. Prices don't include sales tax, which is added at checkout where it applies.

Deposits, and paying the balance

A deposit starts the job: $65 matte, $100 gloss. It covers materials and prep and holds your place in line. The balance, plus return shipping, is due when the work is finished, and your parts ship once it's paid. Our refund policy says when a deposit comes back and when it doesn't.

Your parts

By sending us parts you're telling us they're yours to send, and that you have the right to have this work done on them. Parts have to arrive prepared: taken apart, with o-rings, seals, springs, non-aluminum hardware and electronics removed. Steel and stainless hardware has to come out, because the anodizing bath attacks steel. If you'd rather not do that, we offer teardown and reassembly for a fee — $60 for a modern Eclipse or Dye, from $100 for older markers and Luxes — quoted with the rest of the job.

Artwork

For graphic anodizing and engraving: ask about the artwork before you send the parts, because not every image can be done and it has to be approved first. Tell us about it when you ask for your quote, then send the file by email, on the reply to ours — that is how artwork and photographs reach us, and approved artwork comes to us as a PNG or an SVG. We don't create artwork; if yours needs making or buying, that's an extra cost and we'll tell you what it is before anything starts — simple work is usually $5 to $20, more involved work can be around $100. By sending us artwork you're telling us you have the right to use it, and you take responsibility for what's in it.

Photographs of your parts

We photograph the work we do, including jobs in progress, and we may show those photographs on this site and on our social media. We don't publish your name or any of your details with them. If you'd rather your parts weren't shown, say so when you ask for your quote and we'll keep them out.

What finishing can and can't promise

Metal finishing has variables in it that no amount of care removes, so it's worth being plain about them:

  • Color comes from dye soaking into the metal, so the alloy, the part's maker, its machining and its surface all move the result. We strive for a perfect match every time; what we won't do is promise a 100% one.
  • Parts that have to match should come in the same box, and should ideally be from the same maker.
  • Anodizing grows the surface of the part by a few ten-thousandths of an inch. Invisible on a flat face; it can matter on threads, bores and anything that slides.
  • Stripping an old finish takes a little of the aluminum with it. On a part that has been refinished several times, that adds up, and it can come back fitting slightly differently.
  • Colors on a screen and in our photographs are a close preview, not a guarantee.

If something about your part makes a result unlikely, we'll tell you before we start rather than after.

If something goes wrong

Our refund policy covers the finish: tell us, and we'll make it right. And if we damage a part beyond repair, we replace it. We find the same part, match it, finish it and send you back a complete piece — a replacement rather than a payment. If the same part is no longer made, we agree a replacement of the same kind with you before we do anything. What we can't take on is a part that arrived already damaged or fragile, a part while it is in a carrier's hands, or anything that follows on from a job being late — a tournament missed, a job lost, time off work.

What we take, and what we don't

Anodizing is for aluminum, and only aluminum. Stripping is not — we can take almost any coating off almost any metal. Laser engraving marks aluminum, stainless, titanium and brass, and plating puts copper or gold on almost any metal alloy. So if your part isn't aluminum, ask: anodizing may be out, but the rest of the shop probably isn't. We may turn down a part that's too far gone to finish well, and we may turn down any job we don't want to take on. Either way we'll tell you plainly rather than take a job we can't do.

This website

The photographs of finished work on this site are ours, and the work in them is ours. Please don't reuse them as your own. We keep the site as accurate as we can; a price, a color or a photograph is a description, not a contract.
